Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has been long known to be longing for Apple's iPhone, which is currently available for purchase in the US via AT&T. The carrier stated a few months ago that it planned on adding the iPhone to its offering during the ongoing year, and, although nothing is still official in this direction, it seems that this might happen as soon as AT&T will lose the exclusivity on the iconic device. While there are no exact details on when the AT&T's exclusivity period will end, some of the latest reports around the web suggest that Verizon might indeed get the iPhone, and that it is already getting ready for the move.

The carrier, as many of you might already know, has been hard at work with enhancing its network all around the United States, and this is seen as a sign for a future launch of the iPhone. Moreover, Verizon Wireless Chief Technology Officer Anthony Melone said the following in a recent interview with Bloomberg BusinessWeek “We have put things in place already. We are prepared to support that traffic.” He is referring to the great amount of data traffic iPhone users usually generate: some of the earlier analysis reports suggested that one average iPhone user generates ten times more data traffic than an average smartphone user.

This has been for a long time an issue for AT&T, which has been criticized over and over for the weak performance of its network. iPhone users on AT&T, and not only, has been struck many times by dropped calls, slow download speeds, and other more. Verizon itself has mocked AT&T's network, while stating that it is capable of handling the data traffic iPhone users would generate in case the handset arrives on its airwaves. “Absolutely, I think we could handle it” is what Melone stated. However, he did not say a word on a possible deal for carrying the iPhone.

Previously, rumors suggested that Apple and Verizon were already working on the development of an iPhone that would sport support for Big Red's airwaves, yet this is not the first time when that happens. Moreover, some rumors suggested that the duo would plan the launch of an iPhone that would feature LTE connectivity. In case the iPhone is set to make an appearance on Verizon's offering, and that should happen at one point in the future, the carrier will certainly have a lot of appealing device for its users, including a wide range of BlackBerries, Windows Mobile-based phones, and the Android-powered Motorola DROID.
