Delayed for several times, the Gingerbread update for Motorola DROID X2 is finally rolling out now. Initially slated for a May 13th release, the update's launch was pushed back for almost two weeks and then another two months.

While the reasons behind the delay are still unknown, it is certain that the update is now being deployed by Verizon.

Furthermore, it appears that the first owners of the Motorola DROID X2 who flashed the new Android 2.3 update have already reported that the smartphone is now working very fast.

The new software update 1.3.232.MB870.Verizon.en.US for DROID X2 has around 100 MB in size and it will take around 15-30 minutes to upgrade the phone's firmware to Android 2.3.

Beside the Gingerbread operating system, the new update brings lots of enhancements and improvements, such as:

Enhancements

Download Manager App:
- New App to manage all of your downloads from web browsing and other apps.

Multi-Touch Key-Chording:
- New ability to enter numbers and symbols with keyboard shortcut combos, instead of having to change to the numeric keyboard mode.

Improved Word Selection and Copy Functionality:
- New capability to select a word via press-hold. A second press of the selected word copies the selected characters.

New User Interface and Color Scheme:
- New widgets, icons and screens with refreshed colors.

Updated Calendar Options:
- Display Calendar and event times in your home time zone when traveling;
- Dismiss individual reminders, such as dismissing one meeting reminder without dismissing other meeting reminders;
- Easy conference dialing – simply dial and automatically enter a conference code directly from your Calendar.

Google Books is now preloaded.

In addition, Motorola made several hardware-specific improvements to the DROID X2, including:

- HDMI indicator clears if cable is connected and an application is started.
- No longer receive duplicate SMS messages.
- After Mobile Directory Number (MDN) change, device no longer performs data reset.
- On the home screen, icons and widgets display properly.
- Improved stability reduces device resets, screen blackouts and screen lockups.
- Correct device battery percentage is displayed.
- VZ Navigator works simultaneously with Wi-Fi.
- Easily subscribe or cancel a subscription to Visual Voice Mail.
- Home tray icons can be customized via press and hold.
- When device is placed in desk dock, device no longer plays loud sound.
- Enhanced User Interface provides improved screen transitions.
- Receive MMS sound notifications while on a call.

The update is pushed OTA (over the air), so DROID X2 owners can manually pull it by going to Menu / Settings / About phone / System updates.
