Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is getting ready to release a new software update for DROID 2 Global by Motorola smartphones on its airwaves, providing users with the latest version of Google's Android operating system, namely 2.3 Gingerbread.

The new update will be delivered to handsets as Version.4.5.600.A956.Verizon.en.US, the wireless carrier announced, adding that, beside the said OS upgrade, the new software will also add a series of other enhancements into the mix.

“Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update, Version.4.5.600.A956.Verizon.en.US, for your Droid 2 Global by Motorola. This update provides several improvements for your device, as well as upgrading to the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Operating System (OS),” the release notes read.

The new OS upgrade brings all the features that are already available on Gingerbread-powered devices to DROID 2 Global.

After installation, users will enjoy a new Download Manager app, new app and power management details, the possibility to enter numbers and symbols with keyboard shortcut combos, improved word selection and copy functionality, and a new UI and color scheme.

The new software also brings a customizable dock that replaces the Static Phone, App Launcher and Contacts icons, as well as App Groups (All Apps, Recent and Downloaded), device and SD card encryption, or updated calendar options.

Other enhancements that the new software comes with include fixes for email and messaging capabilities like POP3/IMAP emails that now show the correct date stamp.

The update ensures that Exchange ActiveSync calendar events are now pushed to the PC calendar, and that an issue with unintended recipient list for text, picture, video and audio multimedia messages has been corrected.

Other improvements include:

New ActiveSync Email Policy Support for the following: - Data encryption for both the internal and SD card memory. - Require manual synchronization while roaming. - Allow HTML email.

Additional Device Features: - Improvements in stability prevent lockups, resets and force close errors. - Bluetooth devices will now select the correct audio recording level for optimal voice capture and alert you when your audio level is too low. - Improved battery life while using Bluetooth. - Access My Verizon without any force close errors. - Reset Backup Assistant under Manage Applications menu. - Enhanced connectivity when roaming in GSM/UMTS networks (Europe and India). - Improved battery life during Wi-Fi use.

The new software also comes with a series of pre-loaded applications, including Accuweather, Amazon MP3 Store, Adobe Flash Player 10.2, Blockbuster, Google Books, and V CAST Apps.

The update will most probably be sent to users over the air, and they would receive notifications on their devices on its availability. You can head to Verizon's support site for more info on this.

The wireless carrier reportedly started testing the update on select DROID 2 Global devices, and might make it available for all users in the near future, although Motorola said at one time that the upgrade would arrive by the end of the third quarter.
