Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless is gearing up for the release of a new series of updates for its DROID series of smartphones, and it has already published a document that offers some details on the matter.

According to said doc, available on the company’s support website, devices in the 2012 DROID lineup, including the Motorola DROID RAZR M, DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD, are all set to receive an upgrade to the Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system.

“Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update for DROID RAZR M by MOTOROLA. With this upgrade you get the latest version of the Android OS (Android 4.4.2, KitKat), as well as new features and enhancements for your DROID RAZR M smartphone,” the carrier says.

The wireless carrier also notes in the aforementioned document that the update will provide users with the usual set of enhancements included in the new OS flavor, as well as with a new version of the DROID Zap app.

As AndroidPolice notes, the new firmware release should also bring along a series of security patches to these phones, as well as enhancements to Wi-Fi and roaming.

Moreover, it appears that the update is also meant to provide DROID RAZR HD and DROID RAZR MAXX HD users with better HDMI implementation.

No specific info on when the new update will start rolling out has been provided as of now, but it should not be too long before users start receiving it, considering the fact that the release notes are already live.

The 2012 DROID smartphones are not the only ones to receive a new set of updates at Verizon, it seems, as the wireless carrier is also looking to push out updates for last year’s DROID Mini, DROID Ultra, and DROID Maxx.

However, it seems that the new firmware release for these smartphones won’t bring along the Android 4.4.2 KitKat platform release, but that it will offer a series of appealing enhancements to these devices.

One of these would include the change of looks for the permanent status bar icons, which are now white, as on all other KitKat-powered smartphones, and not blue, as before (these phones received Android 4.4 a few months ago, but the UI change was not included).

Additionally, the update will bring along a series of bug fixes, as well as some improvements to the roaming capabilities of these smartphones.

The new set of updates should start arriving on smartphones soon, but they will be released in phases, as it usually happens. This means that not all of their owners will receive it right away, and that they will have to wait for a few days before that happens.
