In an attempt to provide its customers with increased protection against threats on the mobile space, mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has announced the launch of its own Mobile Security application for Android.

According to the company, the new application has been designed to offer increased protection against digital and physical threats, thus helping users easily secure and protect their Android devices.

Dubbed Verizon Mobile Security, the new software was released with support for all handsets running under Android 2.1 or newer, and is already available for download in the Google Play store.

The new application was built with security capabilities coming from Asurion and McAfee, the wireless carrier announced.

“Reaffirming Verizon Wireless' commitment to robust security, Verizon Mobile Security helps customers protect their devices from digital threats and equips customers with the power to remotely locate, alarm, lock and even wipe data from a misplaced or lost device,” the company notes.

There are three different versions of the app that users will get the chance to install and test on their Android devices.

With Verizon Mobile Security Basic, antivirus protection powered by McAfee is available, along with the McAfee SiteAdvisor that can identify and warn customers of suspicious websites. Offered for free, the app requires a data plan to work.

Next, there’s Verizon Mobile Security Premium, with the features mentioned above and with McAfee App Alert included in the mix as well. This app flavor goes for $1.99/month per line, and also comes with recovery features from Asurion to locate, lock and wipe lost or stolen devices.

The last option is Verizon Mobile Security Premium with Total Equipment Coverage, available at $1/month per line for customers with Total Equipment Coverage. It includes both Asurion's Wireless Protection Plan for lost, stolen, and damaged devices, as well as Verizon Wireless' Extended Warranty.

The application is currently available for download with support for over 30 Android smartphones in Verizon’s lineup, including the Samsung Galaxy S III and DROID RAZR M by Motorola. Additional info on the app can be found on Verizon’s website.
