Verizon has just announced the availability of a new software update for its Droid Eris smartphone. The maintenance update is now being rolled-out, but those who haven't received the notification yet can check for the upgrade manually.

The new update will bring the Droid Eris ROM software to version 2.41.605.6 and the phone's Radio to version 2.42.01.04.27.

In addition, the update comes with several new features and improvements such as:

- Improved Bluetooth connection performance with Mercedes-Benz E350 automobiles;
- New Twitter authentication allows users to login to their accounts with ease;
- The Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) display, showcasing the strength of the incoming signal on the device, has been visually improved;
- Visual Voice Mail (v1.0.19) now comes preloaded;
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 calendars can now be synced with the device;
- Videos, pictures, and audio multimedia messages can be sent and received with or without text included;
- Videos, pictures, and audio multimedia messages sent to devices on other wireless carrier networks will be received
.

Even though HTC Droid Eris seems a more than capable device, Verizon announced a few months ago, in September 2010, that it would never upgrade the phone's software to Android 2.2 Froyo.

Instead, the carrier said that it would focus on higher end devices from its offering, such as Samsung Captivate.

The Eris is powered by a Qualcomm MSM7600 528 MHz ARM 11 processor and embeds 288 MB RAM, 512 MB ROM, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB, 8GB included).

Its 3.2-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 262K colors support features a 320 x 480 pixels resolution, as well as accelerometer sensor for UI auto-rotate and proximity sensor for auto turn-off.

Verizon customers who own a Droid Eris and haven't received the update notification yet can attempt to manually download it by going to Menu / Settings / About phone / System updates.
