It is now “under development” after a long testing period

If you happen to own a Verizon-branded Windows Phone handset, then you seem to be out of luck. The carrier has recently delayed the Windows Phone 8.1 update for HTC 8X for unknown reasons, and now it’s also pushing the Lumia Cyan update even further.

Although Windows Phone 8.1 for HTC 8X should have arrived in late October, HTC confirmed last week that they had been hit by a few bugs, which is why they wouldn’t be able to deliver on the initial promise.

Today, the folks over at Windows Central report another change in Verizon’s update roadmap, which will definitely displease lots of customers.

It appears that the status of the Lumia Cyan update for Nokia Lumia Icon, Lumia 822 and Lumia 928 has just been changed from “Under Testing” to “Under Development,” which means that it was pushed back a little.

The reason might be the fact that Verizon has found some issues with the build sent by HTC and had to resend it to the Taiwanese company for further testing the fixing.

Here is a possible explanation for the delay, as reported by someone who claims having taken part in a conference call with Microsoft and Verizon Tech Support:

"Nokia confirmed with me that the reason Verizon is holding up the Cyan firmware update for the Lumia Icon is because Verizon is demanding that their phone apps (VZ Navigator, My Verizon, Voicemail, etc.) work 'perfectly' on the device before they will approve the Cyan firmware update. They sent the Cyan firmware update back to Microsoft for "development changes" to ensure this happens."

The update may not be available until next year or not at all

This statement may be accurate especially if we take into consideration an older tweet that Joe Belfiore sent in reply to questions regarding the Windows Phone 8.1 update for Verizon HTC 8X:

“MS/Verizon are working on some bug fixes-- VZW taking the quality seriously. We aren't sure how long it will take, but work is underway.”

Unfortunately, we can’t even tell whether or not Microsoft and Verizon will eventually end up bringing Windows Phone 8.1 and Lumia Cyan to these devices, but we can only hope that this will happen sooner rather than later.

Verizon is the only carrier that has changed the status of the Lumia Cyan update to “Under development,” so if you own any of the three smartphones mentioned with the Big Red’s brand on it, then you will have to wait a lot longer to get Lumia Cyan. Sorry, folks.
