Mobile phone carrier Verizon Wireless has just announced a series of enhancements brought to its 3G network in Millinocket, Maine. According to the company, the move was driven by an increase in wireless voice, 3G multimedia and Internet access in Penobscot County, Maine, and consists of the deployment of a new cell site in the area.

Through this enhancement, the wireless services provider expects to be able to provide better wireless voice and 3G data coverage along Route 11 in downtown Millinocket, as well as in the surrounding areas. At the same time, the company notes that the network improvement should enable its customers using notebook computers or smartphones to download applications, browse over the Internet for news, stock quotes, sports and more, work while on the go, download and stream music or videos, download and play 3D games, send emails, or connect with friends via IM, social networking sites and more.

“People across Maine are increasingly relying on smartphones and 3G apps to manage their busy lives and stay connected at home or on-the-go,” said director for Network Systems Performance for Verizon Wireless, Richard Enright. “The $2.6 billion we’ve invested into our New England network has kept us ahead of consumer trends, provided our customers a 3G advantage and underscored our belief that any mobile device is only as good as the network it runs on. Proactive and sustained investment has made Verizon Wireless the 3G leader in New England and nationwide.”

Additionally, the carrier announced that its Verizon Wireless’ 3G network is being used for the provision of a series of enhanced mobile multimedia services, including Mobile Broadband Internet Access or V CAST Video. The former offers access to email, downloading of files, browsing the web and more from notebook computers and other connected devices, while the latter includes the possibility to play 3D games or stream video clips straight on the handset. Verizon's New England network earned J.D. Power and Associates recognition for “Highest Call Quality Performance among Wireless Cell Phone Users in the Northeast.”
