Even as the USB Implementers Forum spoke of its plans to demo many USB 3.0 products at CES 2011, Verbatim came forth and announced a whole line of such devices, namely portable hard disk drives.

Already there are quite a slew of external and/or portable storage devices, each with their own means of communicating with host PCs or other electronics.

Some are network-attached storage units (NAS) with LAN, others are just external hard disk drives or solid state drives with eSATA, FireWire or USB.

In terms of USB connectivity, SuperSpeed USB 3.0 is the fastest available iteration of the standard, the same one set to be demonstrated at CES 2011.

Basically, with a speed of 4.8 Gbps (5 Gbps), it is ten times faster than USB 2.0.

Not willing to wait until CES, since it would mean the loss of the holiday shopping season hype after all, Verbatim launched a new set of HDDs.

The portable hard disk drives are additions to the Store 'n' Go collection and, in addition to their speed and high capacity, feature the benefit of multiple color options.

Basically, while a black version exists, the real highlight are the six others (Eucalyptus Green, Hot Pink, Caribbean Blue, Sunkissed Yellow, Volcanic Orange and Violet).

The other major highlight of the press release is that the newcomers have a capacity of 1 TB, though 500 GB versions also exists.

They measure 127 x 82 x 20 mm and have a weight of 187 grams, plus backwards compatibility with USB 2.0 and a GREEN button, for entering an energy-saving mode.

Verbatim's new 1 TB Store 'n' Go weighs 185 grams, has a price tag of 119 Euro and is bundled with Nero BackItUp and Burn Essentials.

Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 are supported, as are Mac OS X 10.1 and Linux (Kernel 2.6.31) or higher.
