Venus Williams will not be playing till the end of the season. That was the verdict after her 6-3, 6-0 loss to 17-year old Polish player, Agnieszka Radwanska. The American failed to make a convincing comeback at the Luxembourg Open this week, suffering a recurrence of her left wrist injury.
The
match had practically no history whatsoever, since Venus lost the match ever since she stepped on the court. Her opponent – considered a future world champion in the WTA – entered the match very determined and broke Williams in the 8th game of the opener.
That was when Williams caved to injury, her staying in the match just making it worse as time went by. From that point on, young Radwanska stunned the former no 1, clinching all remaining 7 games. It was the teenager’s best performance since reaching the Wimbledon 4th round earlier this year.
"
I was having a big problem with it and there was nothing I could do today about it. It was at the end of the first set I couldn't hit my backhand any more. I was playing pretty good tennis in the first match and thought I could move on from there, but today was really frustrating", said Williams after the match.
Venus dropped to 54 in the WTA standings, after sitting off the court for more than 3 months. She missed the US Open this beginning of autumn, and started her training for the Australian Grand Slam in January. Unfortunately, despite beating 6th seeded Ana Ivanovic in the first round, Williams’ health let her down against Radwanska.
The Polish player will go ahead and meet another tough opponent in the 3rd round, 1st seeded Jelena Dementieva. Here are the other results from Luxembourg Open’s 2nd round:
Patty Schnyder – Chanda Rubin 6-0, 6-3
Francesca Schiavone – Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1
Karin Knapp – Kveta Peschke 6-4, 6-4
Daniela Hantuchova –
Dinara Safina 5-7, 3-6
Alona Bondarenko – Katarina Srebotnik 4-6, 6-4, 6-3
Natalie Dechy – Nadia Petrova 6-4, 6-3
