The Williams family could not have missed having at least one of their champions in the Wimbledon tournament. And, since Serena is still OUT of the WTA Tour - she might not come back very soon - Venus will try to defend her crown in London. After beating fellow American Lindsay Davenport in last year's final, the older Williams sister is now trying to show that she still has it. After a disappointing loss to Czech Republic's Nicole Vaidisova in the quarterfinals of the Roland Garros Grand Slam, the American decided to become a serious contender for the 2006 leading position. That would be very hard though, since she is still to win a tournament this season. She tried it in Warsaw, but didn't get past the quarterfinals. She entered the Rome tournament as well, but was struck by Martina Hingis' revenge in the semis. "During the last six weeks, I had a lot of challenges physically that I was able to overcome just to be here today. I'm proud of that. I just want to get stronger and get better", said the American former number one. And things may be easier for her, since Davenport will not be attending this year's edition. Only a few days ago, the American player said that she will not be able to play at Wimbledon due to an old injury. So, a few weeks away from the tournament, two favorites - both American - are already out of the picture. Venus Williams will now have the chance to repeat her last year performance when, even if beaten in the 3rd round of the French Open, she went on and won the Wimbledon title.
