Both lines are made of 2.5-inch drives and have capacities of up to 240 GB

Solid-state drives have started to come out about as often as hard disk drives, so we aren't too shocked to learn that Silicon power has prepared two whole series of such storage devices.

The new collections of SSDs that Silicon power has finished putting together are called Silicon Power Velox V55 Series and Slim S55 Series.

Both of them are made of 2.5-inch drives featuring the SATA III interface, otherwise known as SATA 6.0 Gbps.

The Velox V55 has a maximum read speed of 520 MB/s and a top writing speed of 460 MB/s. The CrystalDiskMark 5cycle/1000MB technology helps achieve this performance.

TRIM command is, of course, supported (Windows clears up used sectors to maintain performance over time) as is Garbage Collection.

Silicon power has even included ECC technology (data transmission reliability), NCQ and RAID compatibility and, of course, SMART.

The Slim S55 has the same overall specifications, but it is thinner, at 7mm, in order to fit inside Ultrabooks and ultra-slim notebooks based on AMD processors.

“With merely 7mm in thickness, the S55 takes it to the next level and is perfect for ultrabooks or ultra slim notebooks,” says the company in its press release.

In addition to everything mentioned so far, the newcomers have all the standard advantages over hard disk drives: higher shock and vibration resistance (no moving parts are great like that) and higher durability and reliability.

Capacity still lags behind magnetic platter spinners, but it's not like Ultrabooks need terabytes upon terabytes of memory. General SSD capacity, nowadays, can at least be called sufficient, if not decent.

“The V55 and S55 are ideal for computer enthusiasts, gamers and multitaskers wishing to take their computing experience to a new level; they can boot a computer in seconds and load applications in a much shorter time,” Silicon Power claims.
