Should work as a backup solution for pretty much anything that has an USB port

This is one of those things that could have been invented earlier but wasn't, possibly because connectivity hubs in general are just now maturing as a market.

What Velocity Micro released alongside its Cruz tablets and projector is the VMUltra Drive.

Most simply it can be described as a combination of a DVD and a HDD, though not in the strictest sense.

Rather than being a drive with both types of storage, it is a case that holds a DVD and a 500 HDD on the inside, plus a few USB ports and an integrated card reader as bonuses.

There is little chance that the card reader integrated into the VMUltra Drive is anywhere close to the 35-in-1 model from BitFenix,

Then again, that was never the point and regular users aren't likely to need such a wide support anyway.

The USB connectors, on the other hand, could have probably done better (USB 3.0 is not supported, only 2.0).

At least the DVD unit can both read and write optical disks (it is a DVD R/RW Optical Drive).

Velocity Micro describes this as “the perfect all-in-one peripheral” but people will have to decide on their own if that is true.

Unfortunately, prospective purchasers will have to wait a while before they can reach any viable conclusion on the matter.

The company did not hand out the complete spec sheet, the same way it withheld information about the aforementioned Cruz tablets.

Verily, the only new gadget it did completely detail was the Shine projector.

Fortunately, it won't take too long before the complete, comprehensive list of features is made public.

After all, Velocity Micro is going to put all of these things on display at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (January 10-13, 2012).

For those that don't know, CES takes place every year in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January.
