Pocket-sized HD device supposed to be both capable and affordable

Velocity Micro just made the official introduction of something that may very well draw a few followers, assuming the company lives up to its promise of affordability and image quality.

The Velocity Micro Shine is just the thing people could need when they wish to watch a video but have no TV or monitor in sight.

Essentially, it is a video projector with HDMI connectivity (mini HDMI port) and a compact enough frame that makes it possible to carry it around in a pocket (4 inches / 10 centimeters).

Even if one's pockets aren't quite that large, a suitcase, backpack, purse or briefcase should do just as well.

Velocity Micro was able to give the projector a resolution of 1,280 x 768 pixels (WXGA) and a brightness of 300 lumens.

300 lumens isn't exactly revolutionary, but it is several times higher than what projectors of such small sizes can normally brag about.

Also, the weight of 9 ounces (255 grams) is well in line with what a pocketable gadget should be.

Travelers will find the Shine particularly appealing, given its ability to play media off tablets, notebooks and smartphones, in addition to PCs and Home Theaters.

Finally, the throw ratio of the red critter is 1.4:1, meaning that a reasonably-sized image can be cast over a wall or ceiling without needing too large a room to move about in.

Velocity Micro intends to sell the Shine Projector backed by a 1-year parts and labor warranty, plus free US-based phone support.

The company will also put it on show at this year's edition of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

As expected, there was no mention of an availability date, nor of the actual price that prospective buyers would be forced to meet.

The only hint is “under 400” which could just mean the not so appealing $399, but nothing is certain.
