Customers running Microsoft's distributed in-memory application cache platform will be able to start playing around with the next version of the release in just three months. The Redmond company confirmed that the fourth Community Technology Preview of Velocity would be made available for download in mid-September 2009. According to the company, a number of improvements are cooking and will be introduced in the next development milestone of Velocity.

“As Velocity moves ahead with the next release milestone, there is an update […] Velocity is planning to release CTP 4 around mid-September 2009. Some of the features planned for CTP 4 would be - Velocity Setup/Configuration changes, Velocity Performance Monitor Counters, Enhancements to Security and more stability & reliability since CTP3,” revealed a member of the Velocity team.

Codename Velocity CTP 3 became available for download at the start of April 2009. Among other improvements, and just like the upcoming plans for CTP 4, Velocity CTP 3 delivered a performance boost. In addition to the extra horse power, Velocity CTP 3 testers can also leverage security improvements, new cluster management options and cache notifications. Following the release of CTP 3, Microsoft has also started offering Velocity Samples CTP3 for download.

“We are planning to add performance counters in the upcoming release, CTP4. The performance counters will be available for one or both of the following categories: Host - A category for single-instance performance counters pertaining to a single cache host. Host counters track information such as total active connections and total client requests for a single cache host. Cache - A category for multiple-instance performance counters pertaining to all cache hosts. Each instance of a cache counter corresponds to a separate named cache in the cache cluster,” stated Sharique Muhammed, from the Microsoft Project Code Named "Velocity" team.

Microsoft Project Code Named “Velocity” Community Technology Preview 3 (CTP3) is available for download here.
