Makes Intel's SSD look cool

Let us start this with a simple question: what do you do when you see that your old PC isn't cool enough to keep up with the latest computer systems on the market? Well, one option would be to start modding, of course, and so turn your PC into something for which your friends will likely envy you. This is basically one of the reasons why computer users resort to modding, namely to make their hardware components, if not the entire PC altogether, look like nothing else on the market.

On that note, the fellows over at MaximumPC have just posted a picture of an SSD mod that brings together one of the latest and most high-performance solid state drives on the market, with parts from one of the highest performance hard disks available right now.

The idea for the SSD mod began with the simple, yet justly asked question of what a user should do in order to fit his new 2.5-inch solid state drive in a 3.5-inch drive bay. Coming up with an answer for it was relatively easy, as well. Why not use the aluminum shell featured on Western Digital's VelociRaptor high-performance hard drive with a high-speed SSD, much like the ones recently released by Intel. In return, the user would get a fast 2.5-inch cooling solution that will look cool even in a 3.5-inch drive bay.

Aside from the design aspects of such a modification, using an aluminum shell with an SSD brings little to no practical use whatsoever. This is because, unlike VelociRaptor hard drives, which are designed to operate at platter speeds of 10,000RPM, solid state drives don't get as hot, so basically, unless you have a broken VelociRaptor you have to rid yourself of, taking the shell from a fully-functional one just to fit it with an SSD might not really be worth it.

The SSD mod done by the MaximumPC is undoubtedly interesting, in that it goes to show how even a storage unit can be modified to make it stand out of the crowd.
