Variety is a wallpaper changer app for Linux and it can be used in a number of ways, including to download new wallpapers from online sources. A new versions has recently been released and it's actually a very interesting application to test and to have.

As you can imagine, there are not too many applications like this one for one simple reason. People usually use what the developers provide them by default or they download their own stuff. Changing the wallpaper is quite easy, so it's not really an issue. A developer thought that he could improve upon this process and he's made an application that provides numerous options.

Before saying that you don't really need such an app, please have the patience to try it. Variety is way beyond what you can imagine for such a simple function, and it's definitely worth it. It's jam packed with so many options that it's even hard to pick a single one, so you're going find something interesting.

Downloading images from online sources is a highlight

Variety can do some simple stuff, like changing the locally hosted images, but that's not really the point. First of all, users will see that it runs in the background and that you can invoke it pretty easily. It's easy to set some online sources for the images and you can also set it to download something different every 30 minutes, for example. The simple surprise factor makes this feature alone totally worth it.

"Variety is packed with great features, yet slim and easy to use. It can use local images or automatically download wallpapers from lots of online sources, allows you to rotate them on a regular interval, and provides easy ways to separate the great images from the junk. Variety can also display wise and funny quotations or a nice digital clock on the desktop," notes the developer.

If you have an Ubuntu system, you can install the application via a simple PPA. Just open a terminal and enter these commands:

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peterlevi/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install variety
Also, you can download Variety 0.5.0 from Softpedia. Enjoy!
