Disney star Vanessa Hudgens is ready to ditch her Disney-perfect image, and what better way to do that than with a grittier, more intense movie role. In “Gimme Shelter,” where she plays a troubled teen, she’s also rocking short hair.

The other day, photos of Hudgens in character – and nearly unrecognizable – emerged online. She wasn’t wearing makeup, had fake tattoos and baggy clothes and, above all, was sporting shorter hair.

As is usually the case, many assumed she was wearing a wig. It turns out she wasn’t: she really cut her hair and is now rocking what she likes to call a “soccer mom” haircut.

“Oh man, it’s really intense. I’m still getting used to it. Honestly, I kind of feel like a soccer mom, but we’re going to let that go. There’s nothing wrong with soccer moms, but I’m only 22!” Hudgens says in a recent interview cited by JustJared.

She doesn’t mind the hair, but she knows it will take some time getting used to it.

Apparently, if the new ‘do looks messy, it’s because she wanted it that way, she goes on to say in the same interview.

“I grabbed the scissors and started cutting my actual hair and then my director decided that he was going to grab the scissors. He grabs a chunk of my hair and just chops it,” Vanessa adds.

As noted above, photos leaked online from the set of the film showed the star with messy and unwashed hair, a tattoo on her neck and a very puffy face.

It only makes sense that she look this bad, since she’s playing a pregnant teen living in the streets.

“[It’s] about a pregnant teenager turned away by her Wall Street father because of her decision to have her baby. Forced into the streets, she embarks on a desperate journey of survival,” the official synopsis of the film reads.

“Gimme Shelter” comes out in 2012. Fans could catch Vanessa just recently in the visually stunning but critically panned “Sucker Punch.”
