CD Projeck Red has yet to confirm the Linux port

Valve announced a big roster of games that are now coming to Linux and there are some pretty big titles among them, including The Witcher 3, but its developer is not saying anything about Linux development or a possible port.

The Linux gaming community is a really tight knit group and they are good at spotting things that might otherwise remain hidden. For example, they noticed that Valve announced Evolve for Linux even if the studios didn't say anything about this. In the same breath, Valve also mentioned that The Witcher 3 would also get a Linux version and they even included it in the SteamOS sale.

The community also noticed that the developer of this game, CD Projekt Red, has been very quiet about its Linux aspirations and hasn't confirmed anything. Given the fact that The Witcher 2 landed on Linux a while back, it's likely that the new iteration will also do the same, but the lack of any confirmation, especially after the SteamOS sale is a little suspicious.

The Witcher 3 was announced for SteamOS in 2014

To make things worse, The Witcher 3 was confirmed back in June 2014 for SteamOS, but the developer quickly pulled that ad from Steam and the Linux future of the game remained uncertain.

Linux fans even wrote an open letter on GOG to try and draw the developers’ attention, but it didn't seem to work and they are still quiet.

"With Linux support coming to GOG in the future, it's good to gather some feedback and show CD Projekt Red (who are GOG's sister company) whether their users want their games to be released for Linux. This is primarily about future titles (such as Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077) since that's what CD Projekt Red are working now at present. But if you want to mention interest in the past titles (Witcher 1 and 2), feel free to comment as well, but don't expect that to be an an easily accepted request, since working on past titles is a less probable event naturally," reads the letter.

It's not likely that someone from the studio will respond, but the topic gathered more than 5000 votes, which is quite a lot. We'll keep you informed if CD Projekt Red decides to answer.
