Team Fortress 2 is one of the biggest multiplayer-only video games, as the team from Valve spent quite some time balancing it out and delivering a great and varied first person shooter experience to players all around the world.

The support from the team was even more evident when they announced various content updates dedicated to one or two classes from the game. But with the latest Spy vs. Sniper update, a small new feature was added, which randomly dropped new weapons and items to players, instead of forcing them to score achievements in order to unlock them.

While some players were extremely happy about this decision, especially newcomers, older and more experienced ones didn't take it very easily and started expressing their thoughts to Valve. Now, the company's Robin Walker has talked with a Team Fortress 2 fan site and has revealed that there are plans about replacing this item drop system.

“I think we've learned that the random drop system is only good for some types of things, like the rare cosmetic hats,” Walker said. “It's good for delivering items to newer players over time, so they're not swamped with choices when they're starting out, and they're not required to grind achievements to get them once they reach the point where they want to start making strategic choices. For competitive players, it's obviously a bad way to deliver items.”

Walker then revealed one of the projects that might replace the system in future updates. “At the very least, future packs will allow you to use achievements to get the new items, but we might move to a mode where we just give them to you. As part of our goal of supporting tournaments more, I think we'll probably add better tools for them to control exactly what players can and can't use within matches.”

Do you think that the current item drop system is a good thing for Team Fortress 2 players or was the achievement-based one the best? Leave us a comment with your thoughts.
