Although Microsoft tried to stall Google's progress in China by filing a lawsuit against the most popular search engine and Kai-Fu Lee, the Mountain View company minded its own business and opened its Beijing research and development center.

Associated Press informs that Google hasn't determined yet the areas on which the Beijing lab engineers will focus and quoted CEO Eric Schmidt as saying that
this could become the largest R&D center outside the United States.

Aside from announcing the opening of the new center, CEO Eric Schmidt also announced Google's new name for China. So, the leader of the search engines will be known by Chinese as "Valley Song" or Gu Ge".

Reporters present at the opening speech didn't miss the opportunity to ask Schmidt about Google's decision to accept censorship in China.

Like in any statement made by one of Google's representatives, Schmidt also expressed his belief that complying to the Chinese law was the right thing to do.

"We believe that the decision that we made to follow the law in China was absolutely the right one," he answered.

Related to the Beijing center, the Mountain View company hopes that it will house up to 150 engineers by the middle of the year.

"We will hire as many people as meet our high standards," Debbie Frost, a Google spokeswoman told ITWorld.com.
