Once retired from the Laguna Seca race in the United Stated, Valentino Rossi admitted that his chances for winning another MotoGP title are over. And I'm sure he didn't mean it in a "get used to it" kind of way. He was truly disappointed with his motorcycle and was able to admit that the Hondas are much more powerful than his Yamaha. Still, he didn't blame his team for his loss. The point-gap that separates him from Nicky Hayden has now risen up to 51 points with only 6 races to go.
Even for Rossi,
that's something pretty hard to overcome. Especially since Yamaha is far from providing him with a good and decent engine. Still, Rossi managed to look on the bright side. Once off the World Title pressure, he can now ride in the MotoGP just for fun, trying to make the best of each race.
"My plan is to have a lot of fun over the remaining races and try to win as many as possible. Then who knows what might happen?", said Rossi after the American GP. Well, as you could see, he did leave an opened door with the last question. It will be pretty hard for him to actually win all the remaining races, while Hayden will have to crash out or manage some poor performances in the process. And, with Pedrosa and Melandri between him and Hayden, things will be harder and harder in the future.
As for the American GP, Rossi said: "We've been in a really difficult situation all weekend with a lot of problems and unfortunately things got even worse today! We made a big improvement this morning in warm-up and I was much faster, so I thought that maybe we could do a good job in the race and to start with we made good progress from our grid position. But then we had a problem with the rear tyre and I lost all grip and was forced to slow right down in order not to crash. Then we had a problem with the water-cooling system for the engine, it overheated and when I saw the smoke, I knew it was over".
His next race "for fun" will be in Czech Republic, at Brno. The Moto GP will take a 4-week break, as the Brno race will get under way on the 20th of August.
