Valencia's Agony Before the Barcelona Thriller

Carlos Marchena and Ruben Baraja are both out due to severe injuries

There was a lot of action in Valencia this weekend. Not only did the club hold on to their 100% winning record inside the Spanish League, but they also had some ups and downs in terms of players. And, as always, let's start with the positive things.

For one thing, Valencia will not have to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper. Veteran Santiago Canizares agreed on extending his current deal with the
club and will most likely play for Juan Soler's team for at least 2 more seasons.

"I trust the president and his word. In the first approach about a new contract, the club demonstrated its intention to keep me here and for our part, we will not listen to a single other offer until the one arrives from Valencia", said Canizares yesterday.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that he already signed a new deal with the club but, as the goalkeepers market presents itself in Spain, Canizares has the best chances of continuing with Valencia.

Other good news for the club came earlier yesterday, when captain David Albelda was declared fit to play by the team's doctors. The Spanish international suffered a pretty serious injury during his country's 3-2 defeat to Northern Ireland and is now back in training.

After two good pieces of news, there had to come two devastating ones for Valencia. Ruben Baraja and Carlos Marchena will certainly miss their team's away game at Barcelona this weekend, as they both suffered severe injuries in the weekend. Marchena will have to stay at least 3 months and a half outside the pitch due to a cruciate ligament rupture at his left knee.
