He was often mocked for his yo-yo-ing weight

Hollywood actor Val Kilmer is now half the man he used to be, and we mean that literally. The other day, Val was spotted running errands around Los Angeles, and he was almost unrecognizable because of the amount of weight he’d lost.

It’s been years that the actor was mocked and criticized for gaining weight, always being compared by the tabloids with his younger self, when he was considered one of Hollywood’s most handsome and desirable leading men.

Not that he ever bothered to stop and acknowledge this kind of idle talk, at least not publicly.

Val Kilmer is now a transformed man

We can only imagine how reading some of the things said about him in the press and in the blogosphere must have hurt him, but because he never said anything about them, everyone just assumed that he was ok with his weight and didn’t care about gossip on the topic.

At least that first part wasn’t true because, as it turns out, the actor has been spending these past several months working hard to get back in shape and start leading a healthier life. The results didn’t fail to appear: so, when paparazzi shots of a much slimmer Kilmer started making the rounds, people actually had trouble recognizing him.

Word online has it that he must have lost about half his body weight, but as of right now, there’s really no way of telling if this is accurate. What is certain is that he’s much thinner.

No “secret” recipe for success

If you’re looking to overhaul your diet and your figure as well, don’t expect Kilmer’s case to offer some secret recipe for success that you may follow. Whoever tells you they lost weight without effort – or, even worse, without cutting down on favorite treats as well – is lying.

Kilmer too got back in shape the hard way, TMZ reports: one day, he “looked in the mirror” and realized he “had let himself go,” sources close to the star reveal for the celebrity publication.

He decided to do something about it, so he changed his diet to include much healthier options (yes, that means cutting down on junk / high-calorie food!) and started working out regularly. According to the report, Val’s go-to workout consisted of “long walks on the beach by his home in Malibu.”

This method of losing weight might take more time to return visible results, but they are guaranteed to last more than with fad diets.

Moderation is key

Of course, not all of us live by the beach to take long walks on it whenever we feel like working out, but that’s not the point here: the lesson to be learned here is that, if you want to lose weight, you should start by walking more.

You can achieve that in a multitude of ways: you can walk to work instead of riding in the car, or park farther from your office if you have to take the car. You can walk up the stairs instead of taking the elevator, or you can take 10-minute breaks every couple of hours and walk around the office. Every little step counts.

However, as Kilmer’s example proves, none of that is useful if you don’t change your diet as well. No one says you should count every calorie that passes your lips, but it doesn’t hurt to be mindful of your calorie intake.

If you fancy a sweet treat like a chocolate bar, a good idea would be to find its calorie equivalent in fruit: this way, you still get to eat something sweet and delicious, but with much less calories and considerably healthier.
