So far a prototype: no word on release, yet

It's sometimes funny to see the ultra high-tech in the computer world these days being mixed with things that traditionally belong somehow to the past. Namely, we're speaking vacuum tubes getting along with Windows Vista and HDMI connectivity. [admark=1]

Now, I know this could sound rather weird (and it is weird, indeed) but not for Shuttle and ESTI: they've worked together and came up with a most eye-catching combination between an XPC and a valve amplifier.

Once with the presentation of Shuttle's new XPC, the SG33G5M came with this very interesting project that actually offers an unique set of features you won't meet on the market. First of all we're talking about one of the latest Shuttle PCs, running Windows Vista and sporting the latest in Hi-tech such as HDMI connectivity, Wi-Fi or Intel Core 2 Quad.

Even more, when it comes to multimedia, home cinema simply couldn't be left at a lower level, HD play back through the HDCP-compatible HDMI output, and its first class 7.1 Dolby Digital Live! and DTS Connect sounds. Everything...backed by a heavy-duty vacuum tube amplifier!

The units come in silver and black and sport a VFD - Vacuum Fluorescent Display mounting in front. So far the rather scarce photo coverage of this prototype shows that the amplifier is running on 12AX7 and 12 AU7, and possibly EL34 valves. Now, everything is cool and OK, but we all know what kind of power transformers valves require... matching the multi-coiled transformers and the portability of XPCs results in a quite uncanny conundrum, don't you think?

At least we'll have to wait for further news and/or press releases from Shuttle describing whether they will be able to offer this new XPC in a customizable way, with client-specced chassis and the like. And maybe we'll then get some hints of availability or pricing.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
