VMware View for iPad, an application that facilitates access to your Windows virtual desktop from your Apple tablet, has been released on the iTunes App Store as a free download.

Requiring the VMWare View PC client on the Windows side, VMware View for iPad allows users to work on their Windows based VMware View virtual desktop right from the iPad.

The benefits are on-the-go access from any location, support for the PCoIP display protocol, support for native iPad gestures for flawless navigation around the desktop, adaptive capabilities of the PCoIP protocol, and the ability to access your View desktop over WiFi or 3G.

“This release is one small step for VMware and one giant leap for personal devices in the enterprise,” VMware says on its blog.

“Now all of us iPad aficionados can use our iPads to access our desktops and get an awesome user experience without giving IT a heart attack about security.  It’s the best of both worlds.”

An expert in virtualization solutions, VMware notes that the focus of iPad client was to provide a really simple way to connect to your desktop remotely.

With the VMware View client for iPad, “access is a snap and interaction with the desktop is easy and efficient,” the company says.

The software currently does’t support multitasking, therefore users have to reconnect if they switch to a different app.

But VMware is working to address this, as well as to add intuitive new features that make the experience even more seamless than it is today.

The iPad 2 should be supported out of the box, according to VMware's director of end-user computing clients Pat Lee, who sat down with Brian Madden and discussed VMware View for iPad, and its advantages.
