The VMware VSphere client for iPad is now available as a free download from Apple’s iTunes App Store. The solutions serves administrators to search for and monitor the performance of vSphere hosts and virtual machines.

Requiring a virtual appliance called vCenter Mobile Access on one of end servers, VMWare vSphere described as “the industry's most complete and robust virtualization platform, offering the highest levels of availability and responsiveness.”

VMware, notorious for its virtualization solutions and cloud storage services, has designed vSphere Client for iPad as a companion interface to the traditional vSphere client.

The free application is optimized for viewing and managing the vSphere environment, allowing admins to monitor the performance of vSphere hosts and virtual machines.

Users can operate functions like start, stop and suspend, and can even reboot or put them into maintenance mode, VMware says.

According to the company, key features of VMware vSphere Client for iPad include:

* Search for vSphere hosts and virtual machines in your vSphere environment * Monitor the performance of vSphere hosts and virtual machines * Manage virtual machines with the ability to start, stop and suspend * View and restore your virtual machines’ snapshots * Reboot vSphere hosts or put them into maintenance mode * Diagnose vSphere hosts and virtual machines using built-in ping and traceroute tools.

VMware urges interested parties to note that this application is only available as-is, with community support only.

For further information and assistance, the company puts its community forum at users’ disposal.

Last, but not least, VMware outlines the requirements for using vSphere Client for iPad, which include vCenter Mobile Access (vCMA) virtual appliance (available from the VMware Labs: http://labs.vmware.com/flings/vcma); a network connection to the vCMA virtual appliance (built-in VPN client supported); and VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter Server 4.x or higher.

Coded by SpringSource, VMware vSphere Client for iPad requires iOS 3.2 or later.
