VMware Inc. has just announced that VMWare Fusion 2.0.2, a maintenance release of VMware Fusion 2, is now available as a free upgrade for all VMware Fusion 1 and VMware Fusion 2 customers.

VMware Fusion allows Intel Macs to run x86 operating systems, like Windows, Linux, NetWare and Solaris, in a virtual machine, at the same time as Mac OS X. VMware Fusion runs Windows inside a secure and isolated virtual machine, protecting Mac OS X and the Mac hardware in the event that Windows crashes or becomes unstable. It also gives users the ability to suspend and protect their virtual machines.

To further enhance the protection of their computers, users can take a Snapshot of their virtual machine, to save a stable state of the PC, to which they can quickly return if something goes wrong. They can share data back and forth between Windows and Mac, by just dragging and dropping files from and to windows opened outside of and inside the virtual machine. Accessing Mac files from Windows applications is also possible, as is copy-paste between Mac and Windows apps.

The latest version available (2.0.2), according to VMware, allows importing Windows virtual machines from both Parallels Desktop 4.0 and Parallels Server for Mac. VMware now supports mounting unencrypted .dmg file format as a CD/DVD disk image, in addition to .iso file format, as well as Mac OS X 10.5.6 as a host operating system.

VMware Fusion 2.0.2 also provides experimental support for Mac OS X Server 10.5.6 as a guest operating system, and supports Ubuntu 8.10 as a guest operating system, including features such as VMware Tools with prebuilt kernel modules, Easy Install, and Unity. Other additions include:

· performance improvements when browsing mirrored folders and shared folders in Windows virtual machines. · supports display of Windows applications in Unity view as 48 pixel x 48 pixel icons. · resolves issues with "Optimize for Mac OS application performance" preference option for Mac OS X 10.5.5 and later.

According to its makers, VMware ships with a 12-month complimentary subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus 2009 antivirus. The software is localized for French, German, Italian, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Japanese speaking users. You may download the new version of the app using the link below.
