14 DAY TRIAL // If there is a single red carpet where celebrities are allowed to have fun with their fashion choices, that’s the MTV one. With the MTV Video Music Awards 2014 taking place last night in California, Katy Perry did just that, but not before enlisting the help of good friend and rumored boyfriend Riff Raff.
Click on the image above to see what Katy chose to wear at the gala. Riff Raff wore a matching outfit, and the pair of them stood out like proverbial sore thumb in a sea of designer outfits and very revealing fashion.
This year, the celebrity turnout at the awards show was bigger than for the previous edition, which means everybody – but especially the ladies – took themselves very seriously. Beyonce was there, Gwen Stefani was there, and several other celebrities considered fashion icons were there as well, which means the competition was very tight.
Iggy Azalea, for instance, had at least 4 dress changes, including slipping into that black body-hugging one-piece she wore to perform “Black Widow” with Rita Ora. The bottom line is that, this year, celebrities in attendance at the VMAs 2014 really cared about fashion and put in a lot of effort to look their best.
Katy found a way to avoid all that, while also recreating one of the most iconic (and atrocious) moments on a red carpet. We’re talking about the matching denim outfits Britney Spears and then-boyfriend Justin Timberlake wore at the 2001 American Music Awards.
Back then, wearing a dress made entirely of denim, trying to pass for a hybrid ballgown, was considered somewhat acceptable, but today, the mere suggestion of such a thing is met with ridicule. Still, Britney and Justin get a pass because this was them at the height of their romance: in fact, they were so in love they even wore matching clothes in public.
Katy and Riff Raff tried to remind us all of those times with their matching outfits, though, somewhat disappointingly, the rapper opted not to don a denim cowboy hat similar to Justin’s. He had it with him, but he refused to pose with it on.
Katy made their outfits more modern with lots of rhinestones and even some chains, while she also wore a matching purse. Her dress featured a thigh-high slit and lots of cleavage, as expected.
