This past week, the Internet has been buzzing with rumors that ‘NSYNC is finally reuniting, albeit just for a one-time performance, at this Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards 2013. MTV is still mum on the topic but, luckily, Joey Fatone’s father is more than happy to spill the beans.

Speaking with Radar Online, Joseph Fatone Sr. confirms rumors of the reunion and actually explains the reasoning behind it.

After years of pretty much ignoring fans’ wishes, the five boys finally decided to get up on stage again and perform as a 5-member act because they believe they owe this much to MTV.

First things first though.

“They’re doing a performance. I think it’s exciting… they’re doing a performance,” Mr. Fatone says for the e-zine.

Just hours before, Joey himself was approached by the paparazzi at the airport and asked about the reunion buzz, but he just smiled and refused to engage them in any way.

“I couldn’t even say why he’s doing it though. Why, at this point in his life. Now he’s his own man,” his father continues, adding that Joey actually came to see him and ask for his advice before agreeing to the reunion.

“But it’s more to the fact that MTV has made them all somewhat of stars, and also made Justin a star,” he says.

As fans know, it was Justin Timberlake who repeatedly refused to get back with the 4 other boys because he was too focused on his solo singing and acting career.

This made the initial report of how he had agreed to the reunion hard to believe: Justin recently launched a new album, ending a 6-year music hiatus in which he dabbled seriously into film, and he’s in the middle of a world tour with Jay Z.

In other words, now more than ever, he might have wanted to distance himself from his boyband past.

Mr. Fatone’s explanation, that this is his and the boys’ way of thanking MTV and the fans for the undying love and constant support, makes sense.
