Music (and music video) fans, get ready for a spectacular night: MTV has just announced the nominations for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, which will take place on August 28. Katy Perry leads the pack with no less than 9 nods.

As MTV puts it, it was only befitting to have Perry lead nominations, since she’s been having an amazingly successful year.

To make it even better, with “Firework” and “E.T.,” she positioned herself in the running for Best SFX, Video of the Year and Best Direction, in addition to six other categories she was nominated for.

Hot on Katy’s well-heeled shoes are British singer Adele and rapper Kanye West, both with seven nominations each.

Bruno Mars is up next with four nods, while a trio of very powerful ladies, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj, are next in line, with three nominations each.

Also up for Moonmen are rapper Eminem (also with three nominations), Pitbull, and rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, fronted by actor Jared Leto.

“Among the acts with two nominations are such veterans as the Beastie Boys, Chris Brown, 30 Seconds to Mars and Pitbull, as well as first-time VMA nominees Tyler, The Creator; Foster the People; and Manchester Orchestra,” MTV informs.

“Other newbies making the nominee list include Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean for Best Hip-Hop Video and Mumford & Sons for Best Rock Video,” the e-zine further says.

Voting for your favorite artists has begun for the general categories, and will continue throughout the live show, which, as noted above, will take place on August 28.

You can vote on the official MTV webpage or through text message. Also over at MTV, you can find the complete list of nominees, which is also included below.
