While some stars chose to accessorize with gold and diamonds at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Justin Bieber attended the ceremony – and walked the red carpet – with a pet snake wrapped around his hand.

As the video below will confirm, Justin told girlfriend / host of the evening Selena Gomez that his snake’s name was Johnson, but he didn’t explain why he chose to bring it along in the first place.

Dressed in fire-engine red jeans, with a black t-shirt, black blazer, crazy-looking leopard-print shoes, rocking geek-chic glasses and a couple of gold chains, Justin was looking slightly more rebellious than his fans may be used to.

Having Johnson wrapped around the palm of his hand probably contributed to this impression.

However, while The Biebs may have been rocking a slightly more different look, it wasn’t entirely original, Hollywood Life believes.

“While his glasses and pet snake were definitely all Justin Bieber at the 2011 VMAs, the red pants, chains, and black shirt were very Kanye West circa VMAs 2010!” the e-zine says, speculating the 17-year-old singing sensation may have turned to Kanye for some inspiration for his outfit.

“Justin opted for a blazer just like Kanye, but added a little bit of Biebs to the look with his leopard sneakers,” Hollywood Life writes.

“While this year Kanye opted for a chambray top and a denim-on-denim look (or a Canadian tuxedo), last year he turned up in red and black — did Biebs take notice? Justin admittedly looks up to Kanye, and it looks like he’s making that clear with his wardrobe choices,” says the e-zine.

Another thing about Bieber’s participation at the VMAs that celebrity pundits have immediately picked on is how awkward his and Selena’s pre-show interview was.

Not only did he go for a smooch at the end of the interview, but it also came across as forced and, to a certain extent, scripted. Check out the video below.
