Host Chelsea Handler was showered with criticism for the job she did presenting this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, but the bottom line is that people tuned in to see the awards no matter what. According to numbers released, the 2010 VMAs brought in the biggest ratings MTV has had in the past 8 years – and that’s saying a lot.
More specifically, the show drew 11.4 million viewers, a figure not equaled since 2002. Chelsea herself has heard of the feat and is
tweeting about it.
As noted above, she’s been severely criticized for her hosting job, which is why she’s also using this opportunity to blast critics.
In other words, many said the awards show would bomb in the ratings because of her, which is giving her the perfect excuse to rub critics’ faces in – in the same ratings, that is.
“Just got word… Highest rated VMAs since 2002. Good job, MTV! Good job, kiddo,” Chelsea tweets.
Before that, she took the time to blast celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who repeatedly said on his website that he or even Ryan Seacrest would have done a much better job at hosting the VMAs.
“@perezhilton. Oh, [expletive] off. I had a blast and the show [was] awesome last night. Bomb? Your life is a bomb,” the television personality wrote on her Twitter.
Perez wasn’t the only one to harshly criticize Chelsea for how she handled hosting duties, so it could be that the impressive ratings was also due to the Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift
so-called feud,
Eminem’s performance and
Gaga’s outrageousness.
“And then there was the awkward plight of the night’s host, Chelsea Handler. She was among the worst in the show’s history,”
New York Times wrote.
“[She was] purposefully out-of-touch, with brief, alarming flashes of off-color racial humor… she never looked comfortable, undone by nerves, brittle material and the wattage of those around her,” the same publication said in a scathing review of Chelsea’s performance.
