The player offers support for all modern Windows versions

VideoLAN has just released a new version of their VLC multimedia player that now works on all modern Windows flavors, including those for smartphones and tablets.

The new VLC app, which has version number 2015.226.1316.1079, has officially become an universal app, which means that it's sharing more than 80 percent of the XAML and 95 percent of the C# codes with its siblings on tablets and PCs.

In other words, the same app that's now available on phones can also be installed on tablets and PCs, so you'll get a similar experience across all devices. Basically, by becoming a universal app, VLC officially makes its debut on Windows RT, Microsoft's own tablet-oriented platform, and on Windows 10, the new OS version that's still in development right now.

Familiar looks on Windows 10

VLC for Windows 10 works pretty much the same way as the Windows 8.1 version, but the difference is that thanks to the new features that are available in Microsoft's new operating system, it can be launched in windowed mode and used like any other desktop app.

And yet, although it looks good and launches very fast, a number of bugs still seem to be there.

For instance, when trying to play music on your local drives, the app crashes every single time. So for the moment, on Windows 10, at least on build 9926, you can't do anything else than watch movies.

File indexing is really fast though and there's no doubt that with a few tweaks here and there, the universal app version of VLC could provide you with the essential feature package to manage your multimedia content.

In the meantime, if you want full functionality and don't like the touch-optimized version, you can always download VLC for Windows desktop and benefit from the state-of-the-art and familiar experience it offers since forever.

On Windows 10, the VLC app can be found in the old store (and not in the beta store that debuted in build 9926).
