The Kickstarter campaign launched by VLC developers enjoyed a terrific success, as donations have exceeded the £40,000 ($64,600 / €49,000) goal a few hours ago.

Although VideoLAN is yet to disclose more information on the project, developers previously said that VLC for Windows 8 should arrive in approximately three months after the Kickstarter fundraising campaign comes to end, so the first release should be here by March.

“This fundraiser is run to allow experienced core members of the VideoLAN team to work on this new port full-time. We expect an initial release within three months after finishing the fundraiser. This would not be possible to do with volunteers,” developers said.

VLC for Windows 8 will also support Windows RT, so those who have purchased a tablet running Microsoft’s new OS would also be allowed to deploy the multimedia player.
