Here’s what the Metro port of VLC looks like on Windows 8.1

VideoLAN today launched the official Metro version of VLC for Windows 8.1, but the application still lacks some important features that are already available in the desktop build already available on Windows.

VLC for Windows 8.1 comes with support for x86 and x64 versions of Microsoft’s operating system exclusively and is yet to offer compatibility for Windows RT, the dedicated OS build that’s also powering tablets such as Microsoft’s own Surface RT.

As you can see in the attached screenshots, VLC for Windows 8.1 has a rather simple interface and although it’s optimized for the touch, it seems to be rather slow when used with a mouse. The application has no configuration settings, but you can still load subtitle files for any of the videos you open.

The developing company has promised to release a Windows RT build in the near future, but no launch date has been provided, as work on this particular project still continues.

The best thing about VLC for Windows 8.1 is probably the fact that it still works with the majority of video formats out there, so you can play your favorite movies in the Metro UI without too much effort. Of course, the app is open source, so expect it to be improved a lot in the coming months.
