Last time we talked about VLC for Mac, the popular media player application was in desperate need of developers, with the people behind the VideoLAN project signaling that development had come to a halt at version 1.0.3. Whether or not anyone has stepped up to the challenge remains to be confirmed, but something positive clearly happened in the meanwhile – an updated version of VLC for Mac is now available.

Featuring SubRip extra style improvements and fixing potential crashes in SSA and svg decoders, VLC 1.0.5 for Mac OS X is the latest version available. Released this past weekend, it also improves support for the 2009 Apple Remote, and adds an array of translations. Newly supported / updated languages include: Portuguese Brazilian, Lithunanian, Romanian, Ukranian, Japanese, Bengali, Walloon, Galician, Danish, Khmer, Polish, Slovenian, Vietnamese, Finnish, Russian, Slovak, Malayalam, Macedoninan, and Nynorsk.

VLC Media Player is one of the most popular players in the world, and it also works as a multimedia framework. It can play almost any audio and video formats available today, including MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, DivX, MPEG-1, mp3, ogg, aac, and more. In addition, the player can also read DVDs, Audio CDs, VCDs and a series of streaming protocols.

Before word broke out that VLC for Mac was in danger, so to speak, the people at VideoLAN assured its fanbase that rumors of VLC for Mac being close to its end were greatly exaggerated. “VLC for Mac is being maintained,” a post explained, on the VideoLAN forums. “However the old Cocoa graphical interface of VLC is not being maintained at this time [...] The reason is that we are in the process of rewriting a new interface for VLC,” the post said.
