One of the most popular open source cross-platform media players, VLC has just received another update on the Android platform. Keep in mind though that this is still in beta, so the changes made to the application’s UI and graphics may not be permanent.

New features and improvements are added regularly via updates and the final version is very close to release, according to developers.

Anyway, beta 16 of VLC Beta for Android is mostly about bug fixes. In fact, developers have confirmed that the latest version of the application is meant to address most of the issues with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.

For those unaware, the previous version improved decoding speed and solved a few crashes and bugs. Developers also mention that the next major update will not be a beta anymore, so we should expect a complete redux of the basic UI.

Due to the fact that this is a beta version, hardware decoding works only with a limited set of hardware and performance improvements are missing. Other unknown issues may affect the application as well.

Until the final version arrives, you can download VLC Beta 16 for Android for free via Google Play Store. The application should be fully compatible with most devices powered by Android 2.1 and up.
