VideoLan has some bad news for VLC fans still holding onto their G4 and G5 Macs. The upcoming VLC Media Player 2.1.0 no longer supports PowerPC hardware.

The change is effective as of VLC Media Player 2.1.0 pre-2, a pre-release (beta) version of the 2.1.0 branch which is currently in development, but accessible to the general population.

The release notes include numerous Mac-specific changes, as well as some tweaks for the iOS output components of the player.

For example, the new version will add full support for OS X Lion and newer versions of the operating system, and there’s a new video capture module for OS X based on AVFoundation (dubbed AVcapture).

The AudioQueue output for iOS (and OS X) has been rewritten, while the AudioUnit output for iOS has been simplified. To view the entire set of changes in VLC Media Player 2.1.0 pre-2, see the release notes here.
