VideoLAN announced the general availability of the highly anticipated VLC Media Player 2.2.0 open-source and multi-platform video playback application a couple of hours after releasing the sixth maintenance release of the 2.1 branch, VLC 2.1.6, as reported by Softpedia yesterday, February 27.

Some of our readers were confused about these new VLC releases that appeared on the same day, so they’ve asked us to clear up the confusion and make a separate article with all the features introduced by the major 2.2.0 update of VLC Media Player, which deprecates version 2.1.6.

VLC 2.2.0 includes a huge number of new features, as well as assorted bug fixes and improvements, so make sure you visit the official announcement for details. We've also reported earlier this month that VLC 3.0.0 will introduce some powerful features, including Wayland and Chromecast support.

Prominent features of VLC Media Player 2.2.0, dubbed Weatherwax, include support for resuming videos from where you left off, support for automatically rotating videos on mobile phones, compatibility with new HD (High Definition), H.265/HEVC, Opus, and VP9 codecs for both encoding and decoding operations.

VLC finally returns to iOS and fights the Vertical Video Syndrome

Furthermore, VLC 2.2.0 includes support for the iOS, Windows Phone, Android, Android TV, and Windows RT platforms, as well as a new tool that lets users download movie subtitles from within the application, called VLSub, directly from the opensubtitles.org website. Material design comes to the Android version of the app, and VLC is now back on iOS fighting the Vertical Video Syndrome with its news auto-rotating capabilities.

Download VLC Media Player 2.2.0 for GNU/Linux (available on Arch Linux at the moment of writing this article), Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows right now from Softpedia. As mentioned, the new VLC mobile apps are also available on the iOS App Store, Windows Phone Store, and Android’s Google Play Store, so make sure you install it from there on your smartphone.
