VideoLAN released the VLC Media Player 2.2.1 multimedia playback software with dozens of bugfixes for various core components, as well as stability and performance improvements.

VLC 2.2.1 is now available for download for GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows operating systems (see download links at the end of the article). According to the internal release notes, this version addresses issues with codecs, demuxers, audio output, access, and Qt.

Several VP9 decoding issues have been fixed, LPCM (Linear pulse-code modulation) channel ordering was addressed, FLAC crashes were patched, a potential NULL dereference in dmo has been repaired, and it is now possible to compile VLC with older libavcodec versions.

Moreover, VLC 2.2.1 fixes teletext framing code in DVB PES packets, addresses a buffer overflow issue in the Schrodinger decoder, repairs AAC samplerate issues, and fixes MP4 chapters and MKV (Matroska) overseeking in demuxers, which could have slowed down network streaming.

VLC 2.2.1 fixes ATRAC3 playback in MKV files

In addition to the above, the new VLC Media Player 2.2.1 release fixes ATRAC3 playback in MKV files, revert to older ASX code in demuxers, addresses a possible crash that occurred when playing SPC files, and introduces a workaround for the TS issue with MPEG audio.

Better support for SFTP (Secure FTP) reading and close sockets has been implemented in version 2.2.1 of VLC Media Player, which also fixes UDP/RTP input on Microsoft Windows platforms, as well as the DTV build with Linux DVB versions smaller than 5.8.

Last but not least, the ALSA HDMI plugs have been repaired, and the ALSA output improved, especially when dealing with larger buffers. DirectSound output now works with multi-channel files, and several improvements have been added for the OS X and Windows versions of the software.
