VLC media player is getting closer to a stable release as the developer rolled out the second release candidate for version 2.1.0, codenamed “Rincewind.”

The stable build is expected to bring to the table ports to mobile operating systems, including Android and WinRT. It should also include a new audio core and re-writes of most of the audio output modules.

The development team has taken the necessary steps for readying the program for Ultra-HD support (2160p and 4320p), notably for future codecs. On the same note, VLC 2.1.0 will support plenty of new codecs, video formats and protocols.

Additional improvements touch on the webplugins and the bindings.

Most of the libVLC library code license has been changed to Lesser General Public License (LGPL).
