VideoLAN has unleashed a few minutes ago, September 25, the final bits of the highly anticipated VLC 2.1.0 media player for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X operating systems.

After two Release Candidate versions, VLC 2.1.0 is finally here, bringing numerous improvements, new features and bugfixes, which make it one of the most powerful, reliable and stable media player applications on the Internet.

VLC 2.1.0 is also the first stable release that has been officially ported to the Android and iOS mobile platforms, as well as partial support for Windows Store App and WinRT.

While support for PowerPC-based Macs (Mac OS X 10.6+ is now required) and SQL has been discontinued, VLC 2.1.0 comes with rewritten audio core, supporting higher samplerates, better volume management, better device selection, new output capabilities and new channel layouts.

Among other features of VLC 2.1.0, we can mention partial support for Qt5.0, support for UPnP A/V subtitles, support for multiple UPnP resources on a single item, improved support for MCE remotes on Windows, AcoustID/Musicbrainz based fingerprinter, extended support for recording MKV and AVI, new video/audio filters, partial support for fragmented MP4, multiple video tracks support for Blu-Ray, and high10, high422 and high444 encoding support in h264.
