VIA may not have any sort of stake in the consumer segment, but it definitely provides the embedded market with various platforms and systems, and the company has now expanded its portfolio to include video cards as well.
The embedded market does not exactly include any sort of system meant to cope with high-quality games or intensive tasks.
On the other hand, certain installations may need at least decent multimedia capabilities and 3D rendering.
Thus it was that VIA Technologies decided it was time for it to create a PCi Express x16 video card of its own, leading to the appearance of the eH1.
Simply put, the eH1 is a low profile video controller based on the Chrome 5400E graphics processing unit and featuring DVI and HDMI outputs.
Constructed on the 65nm manufacturing process technology, this GPU has support for OpenGl ES 2.0, OpenGL 3.1 and DirectX 10.1.
Additionally, the card boasts 512 MB of Samsung-made DDR3 memory, a memory interface of 64 bits and the ability to not just multi-stream Full HD video (1,080p) but also to render stereoscopic 3D.
"The VIA eH1 hits a real sweet spot for the embedded industry as a whole," said Daniel Wu, Vice President, VIA Embedded Platform Division, VIA Technologies, Inc.
"Offering technologies like DX10.1, OpenGL/CL, plus multi-channel HD video playback on an extremely low power AIB will excite system integrators who want to bring the latest features to existing platforms," he added.
The product should end up being used in such applications as digital signage, advertising, gaming, POS and POI, among others.
It is backed by a three-year product longevity guarantee and said to be “the most power-efficient discrete graphics and video solution on the market today,” at least on the embedded front.
