The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA for short) just completed the second DisplayPort standard test. VESA is the worldwide organism that develops and implements the technical specifications of open display interfaces and several other standards used by the computing industry. After the successful implementation of the first DisplayPort standard and its adoption by hardware manufacturers, VESA went to write the specifications for the second standard, the DirectPort version 1.1, which will extend the first one and offer a number of improvements.

The second DisplayPort plugtest is centered around the validation of the DisplayPort Compliance Test Specifications (CTS for short) and Test Methods of Implementation (also know as MOI) developed by VESA in order to ensure that products made by different vendors that implement the standard can successfully interoperate. At the test, a number of twenty-five computer, flat panel, component, and test equipment manufacturers were represented. Among them, there were companies like Agilent, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), DCP LLC, Dell, Intel, LG, Philips LCD, NVIDIA, Samsung Electronics and Tektronix. The two-day testing period was centered on testing all the hardware parts that are related to the DisplayPort standard like cables, transmitters, receivers, monitors and graphic cards.

According to the VESA press release concerning this event, AMD presented the first graphics processor with a native DisplayPort interface, while at the same time Samsung Electronics unveiled their 30 inch LCD flat panel display that uses the new DisplayPort 1.1 specifications including the high 10.8 Gbps bandwidth to display a full 2560 x 1600 resolution picture using only a single link. "We are very pleased with high level of interest in this new open interface standard, as demonstrated by the success of this PlugTest," said Bob Myers, chairman, VESA. "There is clearly widespread and growing support for DisplayPort, and we are expecting to see even a larger turnout at our next PlugTest this fall."
