Window manipulation in Windows can be simplified dramatically, as David Klionsky and Julia Schwarz showed with their project for UIST 2011 Student Innovation Contest, which won first prize in the Most Useful category.

Watch the video embedded at the top of this article to see how the Microsoft Touch Mouse can be extended with additional capabilities to allow users to better interact with opened windows and easily mundane perform tasks.

“Moving and resizing windows still requires a surprising amount of precision from the user, because they must select either the top bar or thin borders of a window to interact with it,” Klionsky said.

“We present two new gestures for the Microsoft Touch Mouse to move and resize windows by clicking anywhere in the window area.”

In the video, Klionsky demoes the new gestures that were added to the Microsoft Touch Mouse by working with the Touch Mouse API.
