Windows 8.1 RTM is already available for download following the leaks we’ve told you about all week, so many users are now running it on either laptops or desktop computers.

While 8.1 is clearly an important update for Windows 8, one that also brings back the Start button, some users still see it as an operating system that continues to be aimed at touch-capable devices, such as tablets or hybrids.

Opinions continue to be mixed on whether Windows 8.1 RTM is a necessary update for the core operating system, with many consumers still thinking that sticking to Windows 7 or switching to Linux is a much better choice.

Here’s what some of our readers told us on the official Softpedia Facebook page:

“Windows 8 is very ultimate OS and I am sure Windows 8.1 will be superb OS.”

“It’s a solid improvement... for sure...”

“So far, it's the OS we should have had in the first place.”

“Huge update actually, hoping there'll be more in a Windows 8.2.”

“Windows 8 is already an excellent OS and the updates make it even better.”

“Windows 8 is not just a bad software, it's a threat to human freedom. You cannot install Windows 8 if you don't have a microsoft.com account. You know why? Because of the great competition among Google, Facebook and Microsoft anyone of this try to enslave its users by enchaining them throughout a registration that tracks down whatever they do both on and off line. Microsoft is in self destruction mode. Firing Ballmer won't help them.”

“Windows 8 is the worst operative system ever created by someone who insist calling himself a human being.”

“It’s just an update.”

“Am I the only one who knows 8.1 is a relatively small update? It's a service pack with a few fine-tune adjustments and some slapped on patches. It's a ‘service pack’ in a post-service-pack-according-to-Microsoft-world. That said, 8 was a fine OS, it's just a bloated OS. Down with the freaking registry.”

Truth is, Windows 8.1 brings quite a long list of improvements, most of which are aimed at touch-capable devices, as Microsoft still thinks that touch is the future.

In the end, it’s up to you to decide whether 8.1 is good or bad, so make sure you use the comment box below to let us know what you think.
