Microsoft continues its efforts to move users from Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 to newer software, not necessarily because old apps are no longer secure, but also because it wants to boost sales of its latest products.

Just like XP, Internet Explorer 6 remains surprisingly popular these days, but statistics rolled out by market researcher Net Applications for the month of September 13 show a slight decline in global usage.

At this point, IE6 is still being used by 4.9 percent of computer users worldwide, down from around 6 percent the month before.

China remains the country with the biggest share of IE6, with 22.2 percent of local users still running this particular version of Microsoft’s in-house browser. Other countries still in love with IE6 are Russia (1.7 percent), Taiwan (3.5 percent), India (2.8 percent), and South Korea (1.3 percent).
