The Mountain View company introduced a new function for the famous Google Maps that allows viewers to find out more information about the businesses from a certain neighborhood. This way, the search giant improves Local Search and makes it more efficient for some of the locations included in the web-based product. At this time, this new function is available only in fifty US cities but Google already announced its plans to expand it soon.

"Recently Google Maps introduced the ability to perform searches by neighborhoods. Neighborhoods tend to be somewhat informally defined but well recognized in certain cities," David Tussey, Product Manager, said today. "You can now do searches such as bagels upper east side new york and restaurants, over the rhine, cincinnati on Google Maps. Additionally, this capability allows you to do city-level searches where the city is uniquely named, regardless of size, such as bakery corpus christi, or movie theater albuquerque," he added.

This month, Google Maps was updated several times, in a move meant to make the product even more competitive for the rival companies. As you might know, Yahoo also expressed its plans to compete with Google by updating Yahoo Maps with driving directions for numerous European countries. The search giant replied with several improvements such as the "text view" feature that allows the users to read the visitors' opinions or their reviews for some of the locations included in Google Maps.

One week ago, Google also debuted a new beta version of Google Earth that brings interoperability between the downloadable application and the web-based product Google Maps. Using the new feature, you're able to view a certain location from Google Earth straight in your browser through Google Maps. If you want to download the program, you can take it straight from Softpedia using this link.
