YouTube, the popular video sharing site launched yesterday a new service for mobile phones.

Videos shot with mobile phones can now be directly uploaded to YouTube. In order to do that you need a mobile device that can shoot video clips and send MMS messages, and Internet access.

Next step is to register for a regular account and then set up a mobile profile. You'll be given a special e-mail address ([email protected]) to send your videos to YouTube website, with a default title and a description.

All YouTube services are free but the MMS's are chargeable.

Steve Chen, one of the company's founders and its chief technology officer said: "The good thing about it is that you don't have to go home to YouTube anymore. People may not carry their digital cameras with them when they go out. But everybody carries their cell phone...I'm interested in seeing what kind of content this will produce"

YouTube currently supports uploads from Cingular, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon.
